Katie Spotz, a 22 year old college student, made history three years ago when she became the youngest person to row across the Atlantic on a solo adventure. It’s ironic, because if you ask Katie, she’ll be the first to admit she was the worst on her rowing team. Her life is dotted with several noteworthy firsts, including swimming the whole length of the 325-mile Allegheny River, and being the first person in her age category to complete the Half Ironman Triathlon. Other feats consist of a grueling 150 mile run across the Mojave and Colorado deserts, solo, and completing a 62 mile ultra marathon in Melbourne, Australia.

Today, we have a video with the news coverage of her historic journey to row across the Atlantic. This inspiring landmark event was fraught with danger, and there was trouble aplenty along the way, but nothing could stop this inspired young athlete from reaching her goal. She’s an inspiration to rowers all around the world now, a celebrity in her own right, and we can only expect more achievements in the future.

When incredible rowing teams from all over the world gather to compete, you know that there is going to be some amazing shows of ability, power, and sportsmanship. Each year at the World Rowing Championships some of the most skilled and trained athletes show off their impressive rowing talents.

There is no other sport that is more exciting to watch than rowing. As the rows lift out of the water only to gently yet powerfully push through the water in complete synchronization you will notice the rowers are on one mission and one mission only. These athletes want to win. The World Rowing Championships were held in Bled once again, and the amazing beauty is really unsurpassed in that area.

The real beauty though was watching the intense competition. And which team was to come out on top? None other but the team from Germany, of course. Germany took the competition in the men’s eight, and they proved how skilled they really are. When you watch them perform as a team you can see the intense concentration and powerful mindset that they all have in conjunction with incredible technique and endurance. See the German win at the 2011 World Rowing Championships below.

Rowing is for everyone and everyone is for rowing! Okay, maybe not everyone is for rowing, but they just don’t know enough about it to truly embrace its wonderfulness. I like to think that all types of people row. Whether this means they are out rowing in the water or even just using the rowing machines in their local gym. I mean, celebrities can row too, right? So I have made a list for you to ponder. It is a list of celebrities that I think could potentially be rowers and those who could not row to save their life.

Zac Efron – Clearly Zac Efron could row. For one he was in the movie Charlie St. Cloud on a sail boat. If the sails don’t work, you have to row. He also has the build of an elite rower.

Matthew McConaughey – This guy is the epitome of fitness. Like most rowers, McConaughey is lean and strong. I can see him having fun rowing.

Ryan Gosling – Let’s go back to 2004 when Ryan Gosling played Noah Calhoun in The Notebook, shall we? In that movie it showed him rowing out in the nearby body of water in the film. The way he looked with his shirt off proved that he was working on that rowing for some time.

Madonna – I don’t think there isn’t anything that Madonna cannot do. Actually she terrifies me, but I’d love to have her on my rowing team. At 108, or however old the woman is, she looks better than most 25 year olds.

Jillian Michaels – Another woman who can seemingly do it all. Jillian Michaels overcame childhood obesity and has lived a fit and healthy lifestyle since, inspiring both men and women to get up and get moving.

Snooki – Can you see Jersey Shore’s Snooki in boat rowing? I didn’t think so.

Seth Rogan – This guy is funny, yes. A rower? No.

Tom Hanks – Maybe his character in Castaway had to survive all alone on an island, but I just can’t see him rowing in reality.

Brentwood College School was founded in 1923 in Brentwood Bay near Saanich on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. A fire in 1947 destroyed the original school, leaving only the chapel standing. After this, the school was rebuilt in the current location directly across the bay from the original site. Formerly an all boys’ school, the college went officially co-ed very recently.

Brentwood College has earned for itself a sound reputation in the competitive rowing world. Graduates of Brentwood include 2008 Beijing Olympic medalists Scott Frandsen , Dave Calder in the Men’s Heavyweight 2- event, and Malcolm Howard in the Men’s Heavyweight 8+ event. None of these athletes was sponsored by adt security or Google.

The school has hosted its own annual regatta since the 1970s, in which high schools and colleges from the US and Canada participate each April.

Here is video of the team:

Rowing is a difficult sport, and it comes with its share of rules and regulations. Along with those rules are safety requirements that rowers and coxswains must familiarize themselves with. Different tournaments and events may even incorporate certain special safety precautions that as a rower you might not be as familiar with. If you want to make sure you know the basics of rowing safety, or if you just want to brush up, look below for rowing safety tips.

Always know the signals of distress. If or when something goes wrong, if you are not signaling that you are in distress help will not be there as soon as possible. Remember to wave arms over your head, blow your whistle or horn, and for eights-raise up one oar vertical to your boat. Keep these tips in mind too:

Stay with the boat and utilize it for a flotation device.

Do not try to swim to shore.

Oars cannot be used for flotation.

When you are preparing for a competition, make sure that you know the venue. Make yourself completely familiar with the traffic patterns and know the tides and all the currents.

The weather can turn in an instant, so watch the local weather to see if there are any possibilities of the weather changing. High wind, flooding, and heavy fog can create extremely unsafe rowing conditions.

Remember that cold weather can create dangerous conditions. When the water temperature is less than 50 degrees, keep the launch 100 yards or less from all shells. Know the symptoms of hypothermia.

Hot weather comes with its own dangers. Be certain that you are drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. Plan your activity according to the heat, and make sure that you apply ample sun protection.

For the launch you will need to prepare for safety prior to going out. Check on the VHF or marine radio to ensure it works properly, or carry a cell phone. Check that the launch has first aid, an anchor, additional line, a flare kit, and blankets.

There is no such thing as being too safe or too prepared. Make sure that you are prepared no matter if it is practice or contest.

To keep your perfectly tuned rowing body in shape and, well perfectly tuned, you likely engage in a variety of cardiovascular activities throughout a week. When you hit the road to run or do laps in a pool, you are making sure that your body is able to physically handle all aspects of rowing. A couple of years ago I experienced an injury that kept me from rowing and getting in my cardio the only way I really knew how, running. I felt stuck and awful because I was feeling sloppy. My physical therapist suggested I hit up the pool to get out of my funk and get in a good workout. I wasn’t able to do laps, but he created a pool workout that got me feeling better and gave me the cardio boost I needed. Take a look at the workout and see if it is for you. Make sure to always ask your coach or trainer before starting on a new workout plan, but luckily pools always get the go ahead since the resistance is safe and injuries are less likely to occur. My routine is below.

Pool Kicks – For this exercise you will hold onto the side of the pool and let your legs float upward. Your body should be under the water from the top of your back down. Make certain that if you are kicking you are not creating a lot of splash by keeping your legs as submerged as possible. Then you will kick your legs, alternating, as fast as your possibly can for one minute then break. Repeat the one minute kicks and the break two more times for a total of three repetitions.

Boxing – You will want to be in shoulder deep waters to get the most from this workout. To begin, stand with your left foot forward and right foot back about two feet or so apart. Quickly jump to switch the feet (from left forward to right forward). Add in a punch under the water for more of a workout, punching with the alternate hand as the forward foot. Do this for one minute then break for three repetitions.

Shuffles – These are lateral shuffles, and you will want to stand in water that is to your waist to middle of your chest. Standing on one side, move sideways across the pool to get to the other side. Do about ten lateral shuffles across the pool for three repetitions.

Rowing is not easy, and in fact many people might think that they’ve got it down pat only to find out that their technique was way off. It’s true I have seen many people on the ERG (rowing machine) who have not got a clue that their technique is hurting them more than it is really helping them. It takes some getting used to when you row the correct way, but after some practice you will realize that you were missing out of the benefits of rowing if you were not properly doing it. Like any physical activity, you will want to properly practice rowing in order to not cause serious harm or injury to your body as well. I recommend that you start out slow on an ERG instead of just taking off and increasing risk for injury. I did some research for you and found some very helpful instructional videos for you to make sure that you go about rowing the right way.

This video is an instructional video that shows the proper way to row. If you are starting out with the ERG, then make sure you start out right by following this video’s recommendations. If you are, in your mind, seasoned with the ERG, watch this to make sure.

This is a useful video for beginning through advanced rowers. The world-champion Charlotte Hollings gives you a look at how to really master the drive while rowing.

Rowing is not just an intense sport anymore. Many people who are not rowers are using rowing integrated in workouts to achieve incredible physical condition. That makes sense seeing as how rowing is acutally one of the most intensive things that anyone can physically do. Some health and fitness centers are even offering the rowing training equipment that may mena that you will not even have to hop on board a rower and row across the water. You can use the power of rowing while indoors and still receive the benefits and fitness that will come along with it. If you are looking to expend some energy, look no further than rowing. The sport takes up more energy than any other sport that has been studied.

What will you need to row like a pro? Obviously, there is a strong need for amazing aerobic power. You’re VO 2max must be high in order to trully complete a rowing competition. Not only that, but the strength that is required in rowing. Endurance in both power and muscles is probably going to be your main goal in any type of rowing training program. Aerobic power and anaerobic endurance will surely come after much training in an indoor rowing setting.

If you are ready to join a rowing club and start rowing, then you can certainly find that there might be a club near you where you can surely learn to row. Take a look at Regatta Central for a list of rowing clubs, or ask other members at your health and fitness center. Rowing is not just for the elite and wealthy ivey-leaguers, now all people can benefit from all of the amazing things that rowing can offer. Whether you row with a team or on a machine (also called and ERG) you will get incredible results and you will gain some serious benefits in other aspects of your life also.

In just 6 short days the World rowing Championships will be taking place. Actually the Opening Ceremonies will start on the 27th of August, and I am so excited to be able to attend this year in Bled, Slovenia. This is my first time to the small and newer country of Slovenia and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to venture out and see the incredible scenery, amazing people, and of course the World Rowing Championships in person. I will be arriving there is jsut a few short days, and I already have so many things I want to do and rowers that I want to meet. Hopefully, I can get some interviews to report back to you.

Bled is the perfect place for this year’s World Rowing Championship because of many reasons. The rowing center that has been in Bled since the year 1950 was actually just updated in preparation for this event, as well as, the 2012 Olympics qualifying place. Another great reason is the fact that Bled has a mild climate and the lake is thermal lake water so it is warm consistently. Add to the list the fact that Bled is an incredibly amazing place overall, and you can clearly see why the decision to hold the World Rowing Championships here was made.

Rowing is one of the most regarded sports in Slovenian history actually. You see, the Slovenian’s have won gold medals in Olympic events for rowing. The fact is that rowing athletes were really the first Slovenian athletes to win any Olympic medals for the country at all. That is why the Rowing Center itself has been in existence in the country for so long. This past year though it underwent some much needed changes and modernization for the current and future rowing events that are to be held in the Bled area.

Be sure to check out the World Rowing Championships from Bled, Slovenia this weekend on direc tv. August 28 through September 4. You will definitely be glad that you did.
